The company is clearly taking aim at the 5.2K GoPro Fusion announced at NAB 2017 and, while this new GoPro 360 video camera still hasn’t been officially released and we don’t know much about it, there is still nothing else out there that offers this sort of resolution at a consumer-friendly price. With up to 5.7K/30p video, resolution is one of the top features of the Garmin VIRB 360. The new Garmin VIRB 360 is a lightweight yet rugged 360 action cam with some very attractive features at a very decent price. We'll update this space when we have more information on local availability and pricing.Garmin, manufacturer of all sorts of outdoor and sports tech, have joined the 360 video hustle. The VIRB X and XE action cameras will be available in June and retail for US$299 and US$399 respectively. Users who wish to make use of multiple action cameras will also appreciate the ability to automatically sync footage from multiple cameras for seamless angle switching using VIRB Edit, Garmin's free desktop editing software. Instead, they are more likely to appeal to users who value the plethora of onboard sensors and niche users such as scuba enthusiasts who want to dive deeper without a waterproof case. The VIRB X and XE don’t really go toe-to-toe with the GoPro cameras when it comes to high-resolution video recording and frame rates. The VIRB XE also has a Pro Mode that offers more advanced manual camera adjustments such as white balance control, sharpness control, color profile control, ISO limit and exposure bias. When it comes to taking pictures, both cameras rely on a 12.4MP sensor that is capable of photo bursts at 10 and 30fps for the VIRB X and XE respectively. In comparison, the similarly priced GoPro Hero4 Silver is capable of up to 4K video recording. The cheaper VIRB X is capable of 1080p30 or 720p60 video but lacks image stabilization features. The higher-end VIRB XE can shoot video at 1440p30 or 1080p60 fps with super slow-mo, image stabilization and a selection of zoom levels. They feature a hydrophobic, flat glass lens that is capable of taking sharp underwater shots and ensure that transitions in and out of the water are unobstructed by water droplets. When they playback their videos, users will be able to tell exactly how fast or high – among other things – they were going, conferring new meaning and insight to what would just be another regular action cam recording.Īs expected of an action camera meant to capture activity in the great outdoors, both cameras are waterproof up to 50m even without an external case. The combination of onboard sensors and G-Metrix will give users an additional dimension to their video recordings. In addition, the cameras can connect to the VIRB Mobile app on smartphones or tablets via Wi-Fi, where users can view live streams straight from the cameras, control and view multiple cameras, and even quickly edit and overlay G-Metrix data. It can even obtain vehicle data like speed and throttle position with the onboard diagnostic tools. The VIRB X and XE will also work with compatible Garmin devices and accessories like the HRM-Run, fēnix 3 multisport watch and Vector power meter to track movements or capture more performance data. It introduces the new G-Metrix feature that utilizes the variety of internal sensors like a high-sensitivity GPS, accelerometer and gyroscope to display a wide array of data overlays for a richer, more informative viewing experience.
